Internal Medicine Academic Department Clinical Department

The Division of Internal Medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Internal medicine physicians apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across a spectrum of disease states. They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems, chronic illnesses, and situations where several different illnesses may strike simultaneously. They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness, women’s health, substance abuse, mental health, and effective treatment of common problems. Internists are trained to see patients in an outpatient office setting as well as in an inpatient/critical care setting. Some internists choose to subspecialize in more focused fields of Internal Medicine, such as Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Rheumatology.
